The Hollow Tree

The Hollow Tree is a concept. A brand rooted in fantasy, folklore, and escapism, built to attract a very specific audience who care as much about atmosphere as they do the products themselves. The challenge was to create an online store that didn’t feel transactional. Most eCommerce sites prioritise speed over experience, but here, stripping things back too far would kill the magic. We needed to balance immersion with usability, making sure the site felt rich and inviting without becoming slow, cluttered, or frustrating to navigate. On top of that, the brand pulls from multiple fandoms and themes, from romantasy to tabletop gaming. Structuring that content in a way that felt curated rather than chaotic was a key part of the build.

We designed a fully bespoke frontend eCommerce experience with a fully developed Shopify backend that treats the brand like a world, not just a storefront. The visual direction leans into deep greens, warm candlelight tones, and gold accents to create a rich, atmospheric environment. The UI takes cues from fantasy settings, with soft lighting, layered textures, and carefully framed content that makes products feel like artefacts rather than listings. From a UX perspective, we kept the core journey clean and intuitive. Category filtering, product discovery, and purchasing are all straightforward and familiar, but wrapped in a presentation that feels unique to the brand. Users can browse by theme, fandom, or product type without losing their sense of place. Product pages are designed to elevate items beyond simple descriptions, using strong imagery and narrative-driven copy to reinforce the feeling that each piece belongs within the wider world of The Hollow Tree. The result is a store that feels immersive without getting in its own way, balancing storytelling with conversion.
